Potential Treatment for COVID-19: Convalescent Plasma Therapy
One investigational treatment that is being explored for COVID-19 is the use of convalescent plasma from individuals who have recovered from the virus. Recovered COVID-19 individuals now have antibodies, which are proteins the body uses to fight off the infection, for the virus in their blood. Convalescent plasma is the liquid part of the blood that is collected from recovered patients and then given to critically ill patients, who are currently fighting the disease, to potentially help them fight the virus. In this week’s episode, Dr. David Hussong breaks down what convalescent plasma therapy is and exactly how it works.
